May 20, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Workers in Sweden's pulp and paper mills will extend an overtime ban starting Wednesday in solidarity with their Finnish counterparts if no resolution is found to a forestry dispute in Finland. The Swedish paper union, Pappers, said a previously announced overtime embargo to run from May 25 to June 1 will now be extended "until further notice". The move is aimed at preventing Finnish companies from shifting production to their Swedish mills. Finland's forestry industry has been shut down since late Sunday in a contract dispute. The Finnish Paperworkers' Union opposes management demands that mills continue operating during Finland's traditional mid-summer and Christmas holidays. Pappers also said it will block any attempts by Swedish companies to bring in non-union labor to work overtime shifts. The extension involves the same companies and mills under the original overtime ban. These are Stora Enso OYJ's (SEO) Fors, Grycksbo, Hammarby, Hylte, Kvarnsveden, Norssundet, Norrsundet Fortek, Nymoella, Skoghall and Skutskaer mills, M-real OYJ's (MRLBV.HE) Husum and Vifstavarv mills, Metsa Tissue OY's Nyboholm, Paulistroem and Mariestad mills as well as Ahstrom OY's (AAO.YY) Staelldalen mill. The overtime ban affects some 6,300 Swedish paper workers.
