May 05, 2006. /Lesprom Network/. Appleton announced on May 3 the appointment of Walter M. Schonfeld as president of the technical papers division. Schonfeld will be responsible for the profitability and growth of the division, which consists of the company’s carbonless, thermal and security papers businesses that serve the United States and Canada. He will join Appleton on May 15 and report to Mark Richards, chief executive officer. “During his career Walter has achieved remarkable success managing both mature and growing businesses,” said Mr. Richards. “He understands how to leverage a company’s core strengths to achieve growth. He also brings a passion for operational excellence and customer service.” Mr. Schonfeld comes to Appleton from Technicolor, Inc., North Hollywood, California, a business unit of Thomson, the $11 billion French consumer electronics company. Technicolor is a leading provider of a wide range of services to the entertainment industry, including film processing, distribution services, special effects and sound services. Since 1999, Mr. Schonfeld has served as president of Technicolor’s Worldwide Entertainment Services Group and was responsible for the $980 million worldwide film services and post production business segment. He managed its manufacturing operations, engineering, research and development, finance, human resources, and law functions. The group employs over 4 400 people at 33 locations, including eight manufacturing plants, in eight countries. From 1994 through 1999, Mr. Schonfeld worked in senior management positions for MCI, Inc., a leading Internet, data and voice communication services company. He served as senior vice president for alliances and international business development and managed partner relations, implementation of global service offerings, development and implementation of global strategic corporate initiatives, which included mergers, acquisitions and new partner development. Mr. Schonfeld also served as vice president of international finance and business development and led a team responsible for all finance operations for the MCI’s international ventures, including oversight of financial results, financial structures, and restructurings. He worked for two years as vice president of corporate development where he directed all companywide strategic initiatives including new market entry strategy, business line expansions, and partner selection. Prior to joining MCI, Mr. Schonfeld worked as a strategy consultant for Mercer Management Consulting, New York and Washington, D.C. He provided corporate level management and strategy-related services. Before entering the private sector, Mr. Schonfeld worked in the Pentagon as a captain in the United States Air Force. He served in the communications and modeling group and supervised the design, installation, and operation of global computer networks for use by an assistant secretary of defense and his staff. Mr. Schonfeld earned a master’s degree in business administration, finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
